Taste the Rainbow
No, we’re not talking about those colourful little sweets. Fruit and veg can be grouped by colour according to their health benefits, each colour group – red, orange, yellow, green, blue/purple, white – offering distinct advantages. Make your plate as colourful as possible to reap the biggest and widest health benefits available at a time when colds and flu are at their most prolific. Try eating seasonally for the best flavour too.
Now onto a subject not quite so colourful…
Eliminate garlic breath
Garlic, it helps give a tasty kick to many of our favourite dishes, however, we all know what happens when we eat too much of it. Yes, it gives us that lingering bad breath that’s hard to shift.
But, it turns out there are foods that you can eat which neutralise garlic breath. Apples, lettuce and mint leaves react with the garlic-breath-causing chemicals in your mouth, minimising the odour. So, get snacking next time you eat a bit too much garlic bread…

Keep an eye on your portions
Getting the balance right is key to achieving the perfect portions. Starchy carbohydrates should take up one third of the food we eat every day, as should fruit and vegetables (if not over). Dairy/dairy alternatives and protein rich beans, meat, eggs and pulses should take up the smaller remainder of our daily portions, with foods high in fat, salt and sugar at minimum – for instance chocolate. Remember, just one glass of V8 Original can help you towards your 5 a day!

Cut Oranges. Cut Stress
Research has linked the smell of citrus fruits – specifically their essential oils – to stress reduction. So why not serve some freshly cut orange or grapefruit with your breakfast? You may feel calmer and you’ll definitely get one more of your 5-a-day!

Spring has sprung and the weather’s improving; time to venture outside. Spending more time outside means better mental and physical health. Research suggests that spending time in nature can seriously improve your health, from reducing stress and lowering blood pressure. So take advantage of all the bank holidays and go exploring!
