What Vegetables are High in Protein?

The body uses protein to build and repair tissues, plus it’s used to make hormones, enzymes and other body chemicals. This crunchy and tasty tree–looking vegetable is often considered the most popular, with some people enjoying it raw, but a lot of the time serving it up cooked on a roast dinner. It has a high content of protein and amino acids, and broccoli is also a very rich source of vitamins C and K, iron, potassium and calcium. Raw broccoli contains almost 90% water, 7% carbohydrates and 3% protein.
Similar to broccoli, cauliflower has a high amount of protein considering the number of calories it contains; 100g of cauliflower offers 1.9 g of protein and only 25 calories. It’s not only rich in protein, it’s a good source of vitamin C and K too. It’s one of the most versatile low carb veggies, and with its very mild taste it can perfectly substitute potatoes, rice and other high-carb foods. Cauliflower is one of the best vegetables for swapping out your carb–heavy sides if you’re looking to improve your health. With many different ways to add more flavour and taste to cauliflower too, it’s a great addition to any meal for some more protein.
100g of asparagus contains 2.2g of protein and is just 20 calories. Not only is it a rich protein source, but it also contains vitamin K and folate. Additionally, it is thought that asparagus may also have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, but this has not yet been scientifically confirmed. If you’re looking to add in some additional nutrients and protein into your dinner, and looking for a scrummy veggie to do so, asparagus would be perfect.
Watercress is the underdog of veggies that contains a lot of protein. Just 100g of watercress contains 2.3 g of protein, and not only is it high in protein, but it’s extremely low in calories. This popular leafy green is also rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin B, calcium, potassium, and vitamin A. Watercress is an easy add into soups, salads and sandwiches. It may not look like the best veggie for bulking, but it certainly has its valuable protein properties!
Spinach is well known for its high protein; with 100g containing 2.9 g of protein and 23 calories. Not only is spinach high in protein compared to the other veggies, but it is also a great source of iron, calcium and vitamin A. Spinach is a versatile ingredient which can easily be added to salads as well as being a great side for cooked meals.
